Event Description: Accessible Parks and Playgrounds Many children consider television and video games as their recreation.  Greer wanted to encourage its citizens to ""Get Outside and Play!"" The result was a play area that has served as the model for pre-teen recreational areas across the Upstate. The construction of the accessible playground provided a second project for the community -- and again it answered the call.  More than 700 volunteers built the playground in just five days in October of 2001.  Every apparatus is 100 percent accessible by children and adults in wheelchairs, and the equipment allows children and adults of all abilities to play side-by-side.  This playground continues to draw families and special needs groups from across the Upstate.

Free2play has been designed specifically to remove any physical and social barriers that a typical playground has, providing the freedom for ALL children to play together. The National Audubon Society's Francis Beidler Forest, located in Four Holes Swamp, SC - less than an hour from Charleston - contains within its 16,000+ acres the largest remaining stand of virgin Bald Cypress and Tupelo Gum swamp forest left anywhere in the world. Here, 1,000-year-old trees and native wildlife abound in a pristine sanctuary that has been untouched for millennia. A 1.75-mile self-guided tour along the boardwalk trail allows visitors the chance to safely venture deep into the heart of the swamp... to experience the peace and serenity that have characterized the area for centuries... to hear the sounds of bird and bug and breeze that have echoed through the trees for ages... to take a relaxing and informative walk back into time... to see a swamp the way nature intended. No pets, please. For those with iPhones or iPod Touches, there is a free boardwalk-specific app that contains all the information in the printed guidebook plus additional text and images to cover the gaps between the stops associated with the printed guidebook. Started by a man with a dream, the garden has grown to become a beautiful woodland preserve that provides a home for wildlife and a display for the nature's beauty. Community gifts of time, talent and money from volunteers and local businesses keep Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve running smoothly so that it can ""educate and inspire"". The Garden is open every day of the year during daylight hours and there is no charge for admission. The garden is a great place for a casual stroll and a wonderful spot for a picnic.

Event Description: Accessible Parks and Playgrounds A granitic genesis outcropping atop the dramatic Blue Ridge Escarpment gives Caesars Head State Park its name. Every fall, from the easily-accessible overlook atop the rocky peak of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, sight-seers are treated to the Hawk Watch program and a spectacular view that extends into North Carolina and Georgia. Caesars Head connects to Jones Gap State Park in what is known as the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, an 11,000-acre area of pristine southern mountain forest. Hikers can take a number of loop and traverse hiking trails that connect the parks, and trailside camping is available for those who choose the longer routes.

Event Description: Accessible Parks and Playgrounds The mountain spring-fed Lake Jocassee encompassed by the Jocassee Gorges, waterfalls accessible only by boat and some of the best South Carolina trout fishing are all part of the allure of Devils Fork State Park. The land around 7,500-acre Lake Jocassee remains mostly undeveloped and the only public access point to the lake is through Devils Fork. Four mountain streams and several waterfalls feed into the lake, making it cooler than others and a great South Carolina trout fishing spot. Plus, the unusually clear water of Lake Jocassee is a haven for scuba divers and swimmers. During the spring months, hikers on the two trails are treated to sightings of the endangered Oconee bell wildflower.

The Catawba River is home to the largest known stand of the rocky shoals spider lilly, a flower species found predominantly in the Southeast. Event Description: Camp Burnt Gin is a summer camp in Wedgefield, South Carolina, for children who have physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. From early June until mid August, Camp Burnt Gin operates four six day sessions for 7 through 15 year old children, two six day session for teenagers, ages 16-20 and a four day session for young adults, ages 21-25. Staff members, in a ratio of one for every two campers, live with the children and assist those children who require help with their personal needs and participation in the activities. Camp Burnt Gin has two nurses in residence.  Nurses are responsible for medication administration, first aid and overseeing medical treatments.  Sumter Pediatrics and Tuomey Regional Medical Center are available in the event of illness or an emergency. Camp Burnt Gin provides a fun, safe summer camp experience to over 460 children who might not otherwise have the chance to attend camp because of their health care needs. This camp offers enriching activities and interaction with positive deaf and hard-of-hearing adult and college aged role models from our community. Our goal is to remove the barriers that may keep some individuals in the community from participating in recreation activities. Through recreation, participants have the opportunity to become more active, learn a new sport, and improve social skills, all while making new friends! Unified Sports offers the opportunity for all youth and adults to play on a sports team. It joins both youth/adults with disabilities and those without disabilities to train and to play together as a team. Smaller fields and modified equipment may be used as needed to ensure fairness and safety for all. Any person age five or older is eligible to participate.

Event Description: Camp Puzzle Palooza is a multi-faceted event for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Classes are lead by certified teachers and volunteers. Activities include a themed story, arts/crafts, obstacle course, age-appropriate instruction, and facilitated playtime. We will incorporate hands-on learning for an experience that is fun and has real-world meaning. This is an opportunity for these kids to have a "typical" summer camp experience in a supportive environment. This is a great opportunity for networking and fellowship. Event Description: **THIS CAMP IS NOT SPECIFIC TO DISABILITIES**   "Camp Mac Boykin is an outdoor camp great for your 7 -12 year old. Each day is filled with swimming, hiking, sports, and many other activities centered around the weekly camp theme. Your camper will have a great time getting to know the kids in their age specific groups. All Camp Mac Boykin counselors have been properly trained and can't wait to meet your camper this summer! Drop off in the morning is between 7:30 am and 8:30 am. Pick up in the afternoon is between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm. If you arrive to pick up your child after 6:00 pm, there will be a late fee. Outside of those times listed above, parents, please park your car and come to the Youth Center for Drop off/Pick up. Extended care will be provided for children between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm for an additional fee in the case that a parent is unable to arrive before then. Event Description: Camp Lions Den is a residential camping program for the visually handicapped of South Carolina. Sponsored by the Anderson Mid-Day Lions Club, Inc of Anderson, SC and South Carolina Lions, Inc. Camp Lions Den is administered by the Clemson University Outdoor Lab. Today, more than 1600 campers have been served at Camp Lions Den and a capacity registration can be expected each season.Who may attendAny visually handicapped child between the ages of 7 and 17 may attend. The camper must be able to walk, dress and feed himself, take care of personal hygiene, get along with other children, and participate in supervised outdoor activities. Staff for Camp Lions Den has been carefully selected to work with challenged individuals. In addition to counsellors and specialists, the camp has a full-time resident nurse. Every camper is assigned to a group of eight campers and lives with, and is supervised by, three full-time staff members.Campers Come FreeSC Lions Clubs support Camp Lions Den for the visually challenged as a state project. Event Description: Camp Burnt Gin is a residential summer camping program for children and teens who have physical disabilities and/or chronic illnesses.  Operated by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control,  Camp Burnt Gin offers children who have special health care needs the opportunity to meet new friends, become more independent, develop recreational and social skills and improve their self-esteem.  The overnight sessions are six days in length.  Activities include swimming, boating, arts and crafts, nature activities, fine arts and sports and games.  All activities are adapted to enable children of all ability levels to participate. Camp Burnt Gin operates 6 sessions throughout the summer.  In each cabin there are 6-8 campers and 3-4 staff members, depending on the needs of the children.  The counselors are responsible for the supervision and the daily care of the campers.  They assist the children with their adjustment to camp life, participation in camp activities and any medical or personal care needs.  Two nurses are in residence and are responsible for medication administration, first aid and overseeing any medical treatments.

Event Description: Kick It! is an awesome new karate program that will provide opportunities for individuals in the special needs community to explore and participate in martial arts through promotion, support, and advocating the successful inclusion of individuals with varying degrees of need.  Karate is a great way to develop fitness and self-confidence skills; however, it is also a proven way to build a sense of community and lasting friendships.  Through martial arts' philosophy and customs, students learn to build superior relationships based on respect and friendship. Event Description: Walk with Ease Midlands is about getting people in the community together to promote and increase physical activity and build new friendships. It's a great way for people to meet friends and stay active!  We offer structured 18 week programs and weekly Saturday walks. We meet every Saturday at 8:30 am!  In case of inclement weather the event for that day will be canceled - no make-ups.  This is an Arc of the Midlands coordinated project in support of a state-wide "Walk this Way" initiative sponsored by Pro Parents and SC Developmental Disabilities Council.

Event Description: Darlington County Autism Support Group along with the Hartsville YMCA will host Puzzle Pieces Summer Camp for individuals on the autism spectrum for ages 4 and up.  The camp starts Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14, 2017 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Hartsville YMCA located at 111 East Carolina Avenue in Hartsville. Snacks will be provided.  The cost is $30.00 which includes a t-shirt.  Please include size on registration. This camp is designed for children on the autism spectrum to have a fun and relaxed time like their peers which contain aspects of music and movement as well as developmentally appropriate cognitive and social skills. Event Description: Super Summer Camp is designed for children with special needs, ages 8-21. Daily activities include art projects, cooking classes, indoor and outdoor games, bowling, movie theater trips, and slip 'n' slides! Each week, our group goes on an out-of-town field trip to explore! In 2015, we will: Swim at Orangeburg Water Park, climb a canopy walk in Florence, go fishing at Saluda Shoals Park, kayak down the Saluda River, explore Discovery Place Museum in Charlotte, attend a marionette theatre performance, play at Otter Creek Water Park, feed the animals at Hollywild Animal Park, and even attend NASA camp at the Challenger Learning Center. Therapeutic Recreation can't wait for a great summer! Camp is held at Seven Oaks Park, Monday-Friday, 7:45am-6:00pm. Campers must bring a bag lunch each day. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided. Participants must be moderately independent in all activities of daily living. We will have a 1:3 staff-to-child ratio. If closer supervision is needed, a personal assistant is required for attendance, though they may must provide their own transportation on out-of-town trips.
