Event Description: Accessible Parks and Playgrounds Many children consider television and video games as their recreation.  Greer wanted to encourage its citizens to ""Get Outside and Play!"" The result was a play area that has served as the model for pre-teen recreational areas across the Upstate. The construction of the accessible playground provided a second project for the community -- and again it answered the call.  More than 700 volunteers built the playground in just five days in October of 2001.  Every apparatus is 100 percent accessible by children and adults in wheelchairs, and the equipment allows children and adults of all abilities to play side-by-side.  This playground continues to draw families and special needs groups from across the Upstate.

Here, 1,000-year-old trees and native wildlife abound in a pristine sanctuary that has been untouched for millennia. Event Description: Accessible Parks and Playgrounds The mountain spring-fed Lake Jocassee encompassed by the Jocassee Gorges, waterfalls accessible only by boat and some of the best South Carolina trout fishing are all part of the allure of Devils Fork State Park. The land around 7,500-acre Lake Jocassee remains mostly undeveloped and the only public access point to the lake is through Devils Fork. Four mountain streams and several waterfalls feed into the lake, making it cooler than others and a great South Carolina trout fishing spot. Plus, the unusually clear water of Lake Jocassee is a haven for scuba divers and swimmers. During the spring months, hikers on the two trails are treated to sightings of the endangered Oconee bell wildflower.

Event Description: Accessible Parks and Playgrounds Stretched along the Catawba River on the South Carolina fall line, Landsford Canal State Park is home to the well-preserved remains of the canal system that made the river commercially navigable from 1820 to 1835. The Catawba River is home to the largest known stand of the rocky shoals spider lilly, a flower species found predominantly in the Southeast. Peak bloom season for the rocky shoals spider lily is during May and June. Favorite activities in this Piedmont park include picnicking, nature watching and studying the canal structures. Fishing is permitted along the Catawba River, and a paddling trail runs through the park for canoes and kayaks.

Event Description: Accessible Parks and Playgrounds One of several CCC parks in the state, Lee State Park was built in 1935 by the CCC in order to provide riverside recreational opportunities for the residents of Lee County, South Carolina. Event Description: Camp Burnt Gin is a summer camp in Wedgefield, South Carolina, for children who have physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. From early June until mid August, Camp Burnt Gin operates four six day sessions for 7 through 15 year old children, two six day session for teenagers, ages 16-20 and a four day session for young adults, ages 21-25. Staff members, in a ratio of one for every two campers, live with the children and assist those children who require help with their personal needs and participation in the activities. Camp Burnt Gin has two nurses in residence.  Nurses are responsible for medication administration, first aid and overseeing medical treatments.  Sumter Pediatrics and Tuomey Regional Medical Center are available in the event of illness or an emergency. Camp Burnt Gin provides a fun, safe summer camp experience to over 460 children who might not otherwise have the chance to attend camp because of their health care needs. The Burnt Gin experience offers them an opportunity to meet new friends, develop recreational skills, become more independent and improve their self confidence.

Camp Wonder Hands is a six-day, overnight camp located at Camp Kinard Lutheran Conference Center in the Batesburg-Leesville community of Lexington County South Carolina. This camp offers enriching activities and interaction with positive deaf and hard-of-hearing adult and college aged role models from our community. The Camp Wonder Hands summer camp is unique in that it is the first, and at present, the only opportunity of its kind for deaf and hard-of-hearing children in the Midlands.

Event Description: Camp Burnt Gin is a residential summer camping program for children and teens who have physical disabilities and/or chronic illnesses.  Operated by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control,  Camp Burnt Gin offers children who have special health care needs the opportunity to meet new friends, become more independent, develop recreational and social skills and improve their self-esteem.  The overnight sessions are six days in length.  Activities include swimming, boating, arts and crafts, nature activities, fine arts and sports and games.  All activities are adapted to enable children of all ability levels to participate. Camp Burnt Gin operates 6 sessions throughout the summer.  In each cabin there are 6-8 campers and 3-4 staff members, depending on the needs of the children.  The counselors are responsible for the supervision and the daily care of the campers.  They assist the children with their adjustment to camp life, participation in camp activities and any medical or personal care needs.  Two nurses are in residence and are responsible for medication administration, first aid and overseeing any medical treatments.

Event Description: Kick It! is an awesome new karate program that will provide opportunities for individuals in the special needs community to explore and participate in martial arts through promotion, support, and advocating the successful inclusion of individuals with varying degrees of need.  Karate is a great way to develop fitness and self-confidence skills; however, it is also a proven way to build a sense of community and lasting friendships.  Through martial arts' philosophy and customs, students learn to build superior relationships based on respect and friendship. Program Details: The Arc of the Midlands in collaboration with the SC Developmental Disabilities Council and East West MA Columbia (sites in Irmo, Lexington, Northeast, and Forest Acres) will begin offering in the summer of 2014 a FREE twelve-week orientation white belt program designed to prepare individuals of all ages with special needs for integration into mainstream programs.

Event Description: Walk with Ease Midlands is about getting people in the community together to promote and increase physical activity and build new friendships. The program includes people with and without developmental and intellectual disabilities that walk with one another. It's a great way for people to meet friends and stay active!  We offer structured 18 week programs and weekly Saturday walks. We meet every Saturday at 8:30 am!  In case of inclement weather the event for that day will be canceled - no make-ups.  This is an Arc of the Midlands coordinated project in support of a state-wide "Walk this Way" initiative sponsored by Pro Parents and SC Developmental Disabilities Council.

Event Description: Mixed Greens is a community project to provide people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) an opportunity to gain the lifelong skill of gardening while participating in innovative community garden and service projects.  This Arc of the Midlands project is sponsored by the SC Developmental Disabilities Council and is set to begin in the summer of 2014 and will offer many opportunities for social, recreational activity, and networking through connections with community members, local businesses, staff and volunteers. This project proposes participants focus on goal attainment, develop physical and mental skills, hone social interaction, build self-esteem, and strengthen their sense of community and personal accomplishment.

Event Description: Darlington County Autism Support Group along with the Hartsville YMCA will host Puzzle Pieces Summer Camp for individuals on the autism spectrum for ages 4 and up.  The camp starts Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14, 2017 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Hartsville YMCA located at 111 East Carolina Avenue in Hartsville. Snacks will be provided.  The cost is $30.00 which includes a t-shirt.  Please include size on registration. This camp is designed for children on the autism spectrum to have a fun and relaxed time like their peers which contain aspects of music and movement as well as developmentally appropriate cognitive and social skills. Children will engage in play, swim, art, and music. Our field trip this year will be going to Ed Venture! Event Description: Super Summer Camp is designed for children with special needs, ages 8-21. Daily activities include art projects, cooking classes, indoor and outdoor games, bowling, movie theater trips, and slip 'n' slides! Each week, our group goes on an out-of-town field trip to explore! In 2015, we will: Swim at Orangeburg Water Park, climb a canopy walk in Florence, go fishing at Saluda Shoals Park, kayak down the Saluda River, explore Discovery Place Museum in Charlotte, attend a marionette theatre performance, play at Otter Creek Water Park, feed the animals at Hollywild Animal Park, and even attend NASA camp at the Challenger Learning Center. Therapeutic Recreation can't wait for a great summer! Camp is held at Seven Oaks Park, Monday-Friday, 7:45am-6:00pm. Campers must bring a bag lunch each day. Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided. Participants must be moderately independent in all activities of daily living. We will have a 1:3 staff-to-child ratio. If closer supervision is needed, a personal assistant is required for attendance, though they may must provide their own transportation on out-of-town trips.
